Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunt that can be played virtually anywhere in the world. People hide “geocaches” (usually plastic containers holding a newspaper and various trinkets) in places and record the coordinates of the “cache”. The coordinates are downloaded from the Geocaching.com website so that other geocachers can find them using a GPS device, like the Garmin Nuvi 760. To start geocaching with your Garmin Nuvi 760, sign up for a free Geocaching subscription. com and enter the coordinates of geocaches in your GPS.
Instructions to Geocache With the Garmin Nuvi 760
1 Sign up for a free subscription with geocaching.com. You will be asked to choose a username and password.
2 Click “Hide and Seek a cache” link to open a search window. Enter your address and select the search radius in miles. The search radius will show you the coordinates of the geocaches located in your area. The default radius is 100 miles; you can change the setting for as low as one mile.
3 Click one of the geocache links that appear after your search. Write down the coordinates at the top of the page. The typical coordinates will appear as a direction (North, South, East or West) followed by a number containing a decimal point. The numbers refer to the latitude and longitude of the lines of the earth.
4 Enter the coordinates in your Garmin Nuvi 760. Touch “Where” and select “Coordinates”. Enter the contact numbers when prompted. The Nuvi automatically configures numbers based on satellites in your area.
5 Travel in the direction of the arrow on the Garmin Nuvi 760. When you arrive near the coordinates, look in the area of the geocache. Traditional caches come in boxes of old ammunition or plastic containers.
